20+ Piano Improvisations
Antiguo Autómata Mexicano
Static Discos, 2021

Ángel Sánchez Borges, the media artist known as Antiguo Autómata
Mexicano (AAM), returns to his adolescent roots: Dadaism and Rock In Opposition movement influences, which inspired him to form the band “Oh! Cráneo ...” (named after a poem by Georges Bataille) in the late 80s.

“20+ Piano Improvisations”, as the title implies, is an album where AAM integrates unusual ways of playing the piano, including “organic”
programming. The result is a Hyper-Muzak of redirected MIDI stochastic, which evoques the ‘Mexican’ pianolas of Conlon Nancarrow and generative music while avoiding the obviousness of atonalism and, at the same time, the glitch-art that characterized AAM’s early work (Metamistake, Microhate and Kraut Slut), displaying ‘experimental’ music based on melodies of diverse chromatic make-up and electronics that aim to reestablish the sense of artistic "contemporaneity”, not as a label or genre, but simply as music made in the present.

The first single of the album “Piano Improvisation No. 7” could not be out of place in the muted interludes of Aphex Twins’ “Drukqs”, sit beside Murcof’s hushed reinterpretations alongside french classical pianist Vanessa Wagner and all the time a heir of Satie’s Trois Gymnopédies while Eno no longer dreams of lonely airports.

“Beautiful, simple but complex music” - Murcof

“A subtle, subdued and immersive album” - Gaspar Peralta

Recorded between January 2018 & November 2020 in Las Torres,
Monterrey, México.

Programmed and performed by Ángel Sánchez Borges.
